The US Justice Department has taken control of five internet domains associated with LummaC2, a malware tool used by cybercriminals to steal valuable data from millions worldwide. These domains were used to spread malware that captured browser data, autofill information, and login credentials for banks and cryptocurrency wallets. The FBI identified at least 1.7 million instances of theft. LummaC2 can infiltrate networks and extract sensitive data, posing risks to individuals and organizations across US critical infrastructure sectors. On May 19, 2025, authorities seized two domains; when new ones appeared the next day, they swiftly acted again. Visitors to these domains now see a DOJ seizure notice. This operation involved collaboration with Europol, Japan's Cybercrime Control Center, and Microsoft. Additionally, Microsoft has taken separate civil actions against 2,300 domains linked to LummaC2. Interrupting malicious cyber tools can have lasting impacts, as rebuilding such infrastructures demands time and resources.
