IRS Veteran Trish Turner Joins Crypto Tax Firm

Trish Turner, the IRS's top cryptocurrency official, has stepped down from her position as significant changes are on the horizon in crypto taxation scheduled for 2026. Having served at the IRS for decades and leading the cryptocurrency unit since May, she announced her resignation via LinkedIn on Friday. The IRS did not provide a comment following her announcement. In her LinkedIn post, Turner expressed gratitude to her colleagues, stating, "I’ve had the privilege of serving alongside some of the most intelligent, dedicated, and mission-driven professionals I’ve ever known." She emphasized the accomplishments achieved together in navigating challenges and contributing to the IRS’s evolving digital asset strategy. Turner's resignation follows the departure of two former directors from the Office of Digital Assets earlier this year. Starting January 2026, new taxation rules will require crypto brokers to report both gross proceeds and cost basis for digital transactions on Form 1099-DA, aiming to enhance transparency in crypto trading. This change is coupled with an increase in warning letters issued by the IRS to crypto investors, as previously reported. Legislators in Washington D.C. are also engaged in tax reform discussions related to cryptocurrency. For instance, Senator Cynthia Lummis has introduced a bill to modernize crypto tax regulations, proposing to eliminate double taxation for miners and stakers, along with establishing a $300 threshold exempt from taxes. Turner is set to assume the role of tax director at Crypto Tax Girl, as announced in a post on X. The firm noted, "With all the big crypto tax and compliance changes on the horizon, we are excited to have Trish on board to help advise our clients!"
