In New York City, police have arrested John Woeltz, a 37-year-old crypto investor, along with a 24-year-old accomplice. They are suspected of kidnapping and torturing an Italian tourist to extort access to his financial accounts. The ordeal began on May 6 when the tourist visited a SoHo apartment under the pretense of a business meeting. There, he was captured and subjected to torture by Woeltz, who aimed to access 'millions of dollars.' Police discovered Polaroid photos of the abuse, including a threatening image of a gun pointed at the tourist's head. The tourist managed to escape before he believed Woeltz planned to kill him. Woeltz, involved in cryptocurrency since 2011, was once part of HCash and Grin development teams. He now faces charges of assault, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and firearm possession. The case highlights rising violent crimes targeting crypto-wealthy individuals worldwide. The Block, an independent media outlet, reported this incident, and while Foresight Ventures owns a stake in The Block, the outlet maintains editorial independence.
